Brindley Brothers are featured in the new music issue of On Tap Magazine highlighting DC's best bands. The issue has Brindley Brothers
on the cover and a great interview and pic inside. The Brindley Brothers. It's more than just the name of a locally based band. It's a way of life for siblings Luke and Daniel Brindley.

While the Osmonds, Jackson 5 and Partridge Family may sound more familiar to some, the Brindley Brothers aren't too shabby. In addition to their role as musicians, both own and operate the successful Vienna, Va., coffee shop/music venue/recording studio/music lesson center, Jammin' Java.

Although the brothers have known each other since birth, they didn't perform together until about six years ago. Daniel says, "We were playing with all kinds of people in the past. One day we were like, ‘Duh. Why aren't we playing together?'"

The duo released "How Faint the Whisper" under Luke's name in 2001, took a three-year hiatus from recording to get Jammin' Java underway, and put out their latest album, "Playing With the Light", this year.

A common complaint among modern families is the lack of quality time spent together. Between running a business and making music, it's doubtful the Brindleys share that sentiment.

According to Luke, the constant contact with his brother isn't a big deal. "I don't know what it's like because we've been doing it for so long," he says. "It's like anything—like a marriage or serious relationship." The other Brindley adds simply, "When it's down, it's hell and when it's up, it's fun."

The opportunity to own Jammin' Java presented itself three years ago. The brothers decided to take a risk, move to the Washington, D.C., area from New Jersey and run the venue. "We figured it really fit with who we were," remarks Daniel.

This Brindley says the decision to become business owners was life-altering. "It's a lesson in taking risks and not going the safe route. That kind of process has a way of making you a different person on every level," he notes. "Obviously people change over time, but Jammin' Java is a way of life for us now."

Luke agrees that running one's own business is all consuming. He says, "What takes it over the top is that we're personally involved. We're not selling mattresses or anything—it's music and it's something we love."

While operating a venue can be a challenge, the brothers claim organizing and booking acts for Jammin' Java has changed the way they approach their music. "I can call a club and know the deal now," says Daniel. "Before, I was sort of a dumb kid who didn't know what they wanted to hear."

Picture the sound of Train mixed with Wilco. Throw in a dash of Pedro the Lion, and you're warming up to the sound of the Brindley Brothers.

"Playing With the Light" is an album that reaches musical heights and emotional depths. The brothers' vocal harmonies are just as impressive as their instrumentations. The disc's namesake song blends infectious guitar riffs with catchy lyrics to spell out a hit.

According to Daniel, the Brindleys' latest release is more of a rock album than "How Faint the Whisper". "It's supposed to be fun, it's supposed to be more in-your-face," he says. Luke cites the influence of local musicians' skills as the reason for the change in styles.

"Part of the difference was the availability of talent in the D.C. area and using it," he notes. "I wanted to showcase the full range of what we can do from the more mellow, contemplative acoustic stuff to full-on guitar-pop rock to everything that's in between."

If owning a business is the key to a good album, the Brindley Brothers have it nailed down.

Although they've only been in the nation's capital for three years, news of the Brindleys has spread—even to the White House. In a speech this year to the U.S. Department of Commerce, President Bush used the brothers as an example of small business owners who would benefit from a proposed tax cut.

While they were flattered, Luke doesn't think the President has ever listened to their music or visited Jammin' Java. "I think somebody just wrote that in his speech," he laughs. David Letterman also noticed the mention and used a clip of the President's monologue during his show. Even though the popular nighttime host wasn't familiar with their name either, the brothers still sent him a CD. "We'll get there eventually," says Luke.

The Brindley Brothers have their sights set on big things for the future. "We want to make a bigger splash with the next record and take everything to the next level," says Luke. "That's the big thing—whether it's the club or the music. We just want to keep growing."

The Brindley Brothers can be seen next at Jammin' Java on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at 8 PM. Josh Joplin will also be playing Jammin' Java that night.

Jammin' Java Vienna Virginia is what the Washington Post calls "one of the best music listening rooms in the Washington DC area." Great acts from Hootie and the Blow Fish to Leon Russell to Butch Walker have performed on it stage. It is owned and operated by three brothers, Luke, Jonathan and Daniel Brindley.
